A wartime city
Before 1942 this was Wellston, a farming community with a railroad stop, a sawmill, a grocery store and peach orchards. That year the War Department opened the Wellston Army Air Depot, now Robins Air Force Base, just east of today's city limits. On September 1, 1942, the town was renamed for General Augustine Warner Robins. It incorporated in 1943 and became a city in 1956.
Housing from every postwar decade
The census tells the story: 50 people in 1940, 7,986 in 1950, 18,633 in 1960 and 33,491 in 1970, with steady growth since. Houses from the 1950s through the 1970s that sit on vented crawl spaces are now decades old. Under them, contractors commonly find missing or shredded ground cover, fallen insulation, sweating or damaged ductwork and soft wood around plumbing.
Rentals and military moves
With a large Air Force base next door, a lot of houses change hands or tenants regularly. If you're buying, selling or getting a rental ready between tenants, say so when you call so the contractor knows your timeline.
